General
What is reporting and why do I need it?
If you're an artist, your music is your business and you need to be able to measure how well your business is doing. MusicIP's Reporting Service provide you with track-by-track statistics on a global scale, so you can see:
- Who has your music
- What kind of music your typical fan enjoys
- In what countries or regions you are popular
- How similar-sounding music compares to yours
Reports can help you make decisions about where to tour, how well your current promotions are working, where your advertising will be most successful, and how to market yourself.
Where does the data come from?
Our data is anonymously aggregated from users around the world, through MusicIP enabled applications. All the data we use is represented throughout the reports by the term "total MusicIP traffic."
Every time someone uses a product with MusicIP's technology to analyze or identify your song(s) in their collection, we note that another person has your music. As we release more ways in which music fans can use our playlist generation technology or purchase MP3 players with our products on them, the more data we will have.
Here's a breakdown of our traffic for the top 10 countries:
| 1 | United States | 39.095 | | 2 | United Kingdom | 10.329 | | 3 | Germany | 9.844 | | 4 | Netherlands | 4.244 | | 5 | Canada | 4.202 | | 6 | France | 3.222 | | 7 | Australia | 2.978 | | 8 | Sweden | 2.942 | | 9 | Belgium | 1.491 | | 10 | Switzerland | 1.394 |
Why can't I find my music?
While we've identified over 30 million songs, we don't have enough global data for every single song in the world. The good news is that the more we see your music, the better the chances of the reports having enough data to work with.
How does MusicIP classify genre?
We currently have 23 genres that we use to classify music. This is a result of us constantly aggregating information from people all over the world saying that certain tracks are "Rock" or "Pop."
The table below identifies the genres we use, which updates as we continue to get more information about music that's out there in people's collections.

Where can I get these MusicIP enabled applications and MP3 players?
So glad you asked.
You can download our mixer for your personal music collection.
If you're interested in MP3 players with our technology built-in, take a look at players from Memorex and Disney.
Who do I contact with questions?
For questions and feature requests, please review our forums or contact support@musicip.com.
Accounts & Billing
How much does it cost?
Reporting services are $10/month, for reports on an unlimited number of songs by a single artist or band.
If you need reports for a second, third or any number of additional artists each one you add is only another $2 a month on your account. That still includes unlimited songs for each of those artists. You can pay by credit card through our secure Sign Up page.
What credit cards do you accept?
We accept Discover, American Express, Visa and Mastercard.
What is CVV/CID?
The Card Verification Value, or CVV, is an extra code printed on your debit or credit card. With most cards (Visa, MasterCard, bank cards etc.) it is the final three digits of the number printed on the signature strip on the reverse of your card. As the CVV is not embossed (like the card number), the CVV is not printed on any receipts, hence it is not likely to be known by anyone other than the actual card owner.
We ask you to fill out the CVV here to verify beyond any doubt that you actually hold the card you are using for this transaction, and to avoid anyone other than you from shopping with your card number. All information you submit is transferred over secure SSL connections.

When is my credit card billed?
Your credit card will be billed when you first sign up for artist reports, and then on the same day each month thereafter.
For example, if you sign up for an artist report on the 15th of June, you'll pay $10 on that day, and then $10 on the 15th of each following month.
If you sign up on the 31st of any month, your billing date will be the last day of all the months that follow.
What happens with my billing if I add another artist in the middle of my billing cycle?
Your billing date stays the same and you will be billed the total amount of your new subscription on the next billing date.
For example, if you sign up for reports for a single artist on the 2nd of June and add an additional artist on the 23rd of June, your credit card will be billed $10 on the 2nd of June and $12 on the 2nd of July.
What if I add and remove an artist before a full billing cycle ends?
You'll have to pay for the full month.
For example, if you've added a second artist and then a day later removed that second artist, your next bill will be for $12.
Can I cancel my Reporting Services?
Sure - simply go to your account options and click the link to cancel your subscription.
We'll be sure to send you an e-mail when the cancellation goes through, and you will have access to your reports until the end of the current billing cycle.
Will I get billed for a final month if I cancel my account?
Unless you've added one or more artists during the most recent billing cycle, we won't add any more charges to your credit card once you cancel your account.
If you want to read all the legal jargon about billing, check out our Terms of Service.
I removed an artist from my subscription, but I was still billed for that artist this month. What gives?
You removed the artist, but still have the subscription available to fill with reports for a different artist. In order to completely remove that subscription, you'll have to go to the "Manage Subscriptions" link and enter the number of artists that you want to keep receiving reports on.
Adding and Removing Artists
Can I change which artists I am subscribed to?
Definitely. First, log into your account. On the main Reporting Services page, click on the "Remove" link associated with the artist you want to remove. You will get a confirmation to ensure you really do want to remove that artist. Once you confirm this, the subscription will open up for another artist to be added. Please note that you can only remove an artist a minimum of 24 hours after you have added that artist.
If you want to completely remove an artist and stop paying for that subscription, you must first remove the artist and then go to the "Manage Subscription" page and change the number of subscriptions in your account.
How do I change the number of artists I'm subscribed to?
You can upgrade and downgrade your account by going to the Manage Subscriptions page.
To upgrade, enter the total number of artists you want to track. The charge for the first artist is $10 a month and $2 a month for each additional artist. When you upgrade, you are authorizing MusicIP to charge your credit card for the additional artists. The charges will be billed to your credit card at the beginning of your next billing cycle.
To downgrade, you have to first make sure that you have artist subscriptions available. For example, if you're signed up for 4 artists and you'd like to downgrade your account to 3, you must first remove one artist from your active reports.
Why can't I downgrade to 0 subscriptions in my account?
We figure that if you want to remove all subscriptions in your account, you probably want to stop subscribing to reports completely. You can do that by going to your account options and canceling your Reporting Services Subscription.
Reports
What is reach, and what does it mean?
Reach is an indication of how many times we have identified your track around the world. It is scaled to be between 1 and 100.
At any given time, you can expect that any number of people working with their digital music collection are using software that includes MusicIP for either identification of your tracks, or creating playlists that include your music.
Reach shouldn't be confused with the numbers associated with locations identified on the map. The numbers associated with the dots are actual times we've identified your track from that location. For example, if you have a dot in Boise, Idaho that has the number "356", we've actually identified your track 356 times in Boise, Idaho. Better make sure to book a show there on your next tour.
With reach, the higher the better. It indicates your music is gaining ground!
What is the map and what does it tell me?
The map shows you where in the world your audience has added your songs to their music library.
If you hover over each dot, you will get the number of times we have had someone add and identify that track within their music library.
You can also zoom in on each continent to get a more detailed view of the concentration of users with your track in different cities by clicking on the magnifying glasses or selecting the continent from the drop-down menu at the bottom of the page.
The report can help you do several key things including plan tour routes as well as areas you may want to improve your marketing and/or distribution activities.
* The accuracy of locations varies from city-level to country-level. Locations that have only country-level information are assigned to latitude and longitude of the capital of the country, so national capital dots should be regarded as representing the nation as a whole.
What is the pie chart for traffic and what does it tell me?
The pie chart shows you where your audience is spread out all over the world. It's as simple as understanding that if you have a larger grouping of fans with your tracks in their collection in Germany, the percentage (%) shown in this report for Germany will be higher than the others.
You can hover your cursor over a pie slice to view the exact percentage of listeners for each particular region.
To get a state-by-state breakdown of the United States and identify more specific locales where you are getting exposure, select "United States" from the drop-down menu at the bottom of the page.
What is the bar graph for traffic and what does it tell me?
This report tells you, in two different ways (by relevance, and side-by-side) how your track stacks up in certain locations around the world compared to our overall traffic.
When you're looking at this by relevance, it shows how far above or below average your track is in that location for all of our data combined.
The side-by-side version of this report shows you your track distribution in comparison to total traffic distribution around the world.
The "average" comes from our total data for that location.
What is the pie chart for genres and what does it tell me?
This report displays the genres associated with your track within music collections all over the world. This is based on the list of genres that we use to classify tracks.
To view the percentage that each genre represents, hover your mouse over that slice. Also, right-clicking on the chart lets you enable rotation and slice movement.
What is the bar graph for genres and what does it tell me?
You can view this report either by relevance, or side-by-side.
Viewing the report by relevance shows you the difference between the genre breakdown in your fans' libraries and the average library. The higher the bar, the more times than average a specific genre appears in a collection with your track. The lower the bar, the less than average times the genre appears in a collection with your track.
The side-by-side report shows your track in relation to all of our traffic. It shows you how collections with your track are made up, and how big a part the same genre plays in all of the collections are know about. For example, collections with your track could be made up of 60% rock music, while that genre only makes up 45% of all collections we know about.
What is a musically similar track?
A musically similar track is a song that is acoustically similar to the track you're running the report on.
What is Google Earth?
Google Earth is a product available from Google that offers up satellite imagery, maps, terrain, and 3D buildings for locations all over the world. We offer you the data you find on your report for each of your tracks so they can be brought in to Google Earth, reviewed, and used with the features it offers.
Google Earth is available for both Mac OS X and Windows, and can be downloaded from Google's site.
Affiliates
How do I join the affiliate program?
To become an affiliate and participate in the Affiliate Program, you must first create a MusicIP.com account. If you already have an account, go right to the Reporting Services page to sign up as an affiliate.
How much can I earn as an affiliate?
The MusicIP Affiliate Program pays $5 for each of subscription you send our way. The minimum payout is $100. So, if you have earned under $100 in referral fees, they stay on your file until the balance hits $100. Once it does, we'll send you a check for the full amount.
When do I get paid?
A check will be on its way approximately 45 days after the end of calendar month that you reached a balance of $100. So, if your account balance hits $100 on June 15, you should receive your check around the middle of August.
If you decide to stop being an affiliate, we'll send you a check for any remaining balance in your account. If any customers who were referred by your affiliate link ask for a refund, the refunded amount will be deducted from your payment.
How do I track my earnings?
You can track your earnings using the Affiliate Performance Report once you log into your account. This report shows the following information:
- Date: The day the activity being reported took place.
- Click-throughs: The number of times a user landed on MusicIP's Reporting Services page after clicking your affiliate URL.
- Subscribers: The total number of new subscriptions that have purchased an account after clicking through your affiliate URL.
- Revenue: The number of successful sign-ups multiplied by $5 per sign-up.
- Conversion Rate: This is calculated by taking the number of successful subscriptions (referred to us by way of your affiliate URL), dividing that by the total number of click-throughs, and multiplying the result by 100.
On your Affiliate Performance Report, you may also view your account balance, as well as export all the data to a CSV file. The report will only show the last 10 days that have had activity occur, while the CSV export will show all activity since you became an affiliate.
What information do you need from me?
We need contact details and information about how to pay you. You'll need to update your information should it change using the form provided on the same page as the Affiliate Performance Report.
If we're not all up to date on how to pay you, you might not get your commission check when we mail it out.
How does MusicIP track my performance as an affiliate?
When you sign up as an affiliate, we'll provide you with an affiliate URL to use anywhere you like - in promotional e-mails, on your Website, and any other places you can think of.
Anyone can then access our Reporting Services and decide whether they want to subscribe or not. We track your link activity and calculate your commission. If the format of your affiliate URL isn't correct, MusicIP can't accurately track click-through activity, and you won't get paid. Double check to ensure everything is running smoothly, and contact us at support@musicip.com or check the forums if you have questions.
What if someone clicks through my link, but doesn't buy right away?
We use tracking cookies that stay on a user's computer for up to 24 hours. If someone got to our reporting page through a link on your site and buys at any time during the next 24 hours, you get the $5 for that referral.
How do I cancel my affiliate account?
To cancel your affiliate account, send an email to support@musicip.com
Why do you need my Federal Tax ID?
Your Federal Tax ID (a social security number for individuals and EIN for businesses) will be used to submit 1099 forms to the IRS at the end of the tax year. We need that information to accurately report your earnings.
Your Federal Tax ID number and any other personal information that you enter on our Web pages is completely secure. Since we send this information to the IRS, you need to keep your information up-to-date, including your address and the name to make out checks to.
I'm not in the US, can I still be an affiliate?
Unfortunately not at this point. But we're working on it. Hang in there.
How will I receive my commission?
You will receive a paper check once your balance reaches $100. These checks will be mailed to the address that you entered during sign up, so make sure to keep it up-to-date on your account page.
